Jodhpur Tourism

Jodhpur is the gateway to the Thar. Mehrangarh rises 120 metres straight out of the rock, and beneath it the old city spreads out in a wash of indigo houses that gave the city its nickname. It is a natural halfway point between Udaipur and Jaisalmer, and deserves at least a full day rather than an overnight stop.

Why Visit Jodhpur

  • Mehrangarh is widely considered the best-preserved and best-presented fort in India.
  • The blue old town around Navchokiya is genuinely walkable and full of small workshops.
  • The obvious base for Osian, Bishnoi village safaris and the drive west to Jaisalmer.
  • Strong local food — mirchi bada, mawa kachori and Jodhpur's famous makhaniya lassi.

Best Places to Visit in Jodhpur

Mehrangarh Fort

Allow three hours. The audio guide is genuinely good, the Phool Mahal and Moti Mahal interiors are exceptional, and the ramparts give the classic view over the blue houses.

Jaswant Thada

A white marble cenotaph to Maharaja Jaswant Singh II, five minutes from the fort, with a quiet garden and lake.

Umaid Bhawan Palace

One of the world's largest private residences. Part palace hotel, part royal home, with a museum wing open to visitors.

Toorji ka Jhalra

A restored eighteenth-century stepwell in the middle of the old town, now surrounded by cafés.

Clock Tower & Sardar Market

The heart of the old city — spices, textiles, bangles and the best street food in Jodhpur.

Mandore Gardens

9 km north, the old Marwar capital, with terraced gardens and red-sandstone cenotaphs.

Bishnoi village safari

A half-day drive out to weaving, block-printing and pottery villages, usually with blackbuck and chinkara sightings.

Best Time to Visit Jodhpur

October to March. Winter days hover around 25°C with cold mornings; the Rajasthan International Folk Festival (RIFF) at Mehrangarh in October and the Marwar Festival are the best times to be in town. Summer regularly exceeds 42°C.

How to Reach Jodhpur

By air

Jodhpur Airport (JDH) is 5 km from the city, about 15 minutes by cab, with direct flights from Delhi, Mumbai and Bengaluru.

By train

Jodhpur Junction (JU) connects directly with Delhi, Jaipur, Jaisalmer, Ahmedabad and Mumbai.

By road

Jaipur is roughly 5 hours 30 minutes, Udaipur 5 hours, Jaisalmer 5 hours and Bikaner 4 hours 30 minutes.

Jodhpur Airport Information

Jodhpur Airport (JDH) shares its runway with an Air Force base, so photography is restricted and arrival formalities can be slower than usual. The drive into town is short.

Jodhpur Railway Station

Jodhpur Junction is about 10 minutes from the clock tower and is the departure point for the overnight train to Jaisalmer.

Jodhpur Travel FAQs

Is one day enough for Jodhpur?

One full day covers Mehrangarh, Jaswant Thada, Umaid Bhawan and the old city. Add a second day if you want a Bishnoi village safari or a trip to Osian.

What is the best way to travel from Jodhpur to Jaisalmer?

By road. It is a straightforward five-hour drive on a good highway, and a private cab lets you stop at Pokhran and the roadside dhabas on the way. The overnight train is cheaper but arrives inconveniently early.

Why are the houses in Jodhpur blue?

The indigo wash began with Brahmin households marking their homes, and spread because the colour reflects heat and deters termites. Navchokiya, west of the fort, has the densest concentration.

Do you provide a Jodhpur airport pickup?

Yes — for all flights, including early-morning and late-night arrivals, with the driver waiting inside the arrivals area with a name board.
